The Body Cannot Contain You Who Are Life

During a nap this afternoon, I had the most wonderful dream! A lifelong friend and I were taking a writing workshop with the prolific writer, Stephen King. It felt really good, and I didn’t want to wake up. But my phone was notifying me of something happening in the material world, plus it was time to do other things. The text message informed of the untimely passing of a friend’s son. After speaking with a couple of people and shedding a few tears, I found myself imagining what his loved ones were feeling, how they were reacting, how they would go forward with their lives. Suddenly, Wayne Dyer’s words came to me. To paraphrase them, he tells us that we can't feel bad enough to make anyone feel better; we can't be confused enough to un-confuse one person; we can't get sad enough to bring joy to a single being on this planet. Once this realization comes, the next step is asking myself what can I do to help the situation. And so the last hour has been spent reading quotes about Life from my go-to books. Wouldn't it be great to live in a world where losing is impossible, where love lasts forever, where hate does not exist, and vengeance has no meaning? It would be grand if we never had misunderstandings, because communications were clear and precise, without the burden of forming words to tell others what we mean. There would be no hard feelings between people, as we wouldn't blame others for thinking differently than we do, because we know that at our core all of us are One. The world we have created is wonderful in many ways, but there are also horrors beyond words, and that causes people to lose faith in this thing we call God. We have created an un-God-like world and blame an unknown deity for what we think we cannot change. What if we're wrong and what we see is not true creation? Imagine that!!

Why Read The Odyssey?

What is the purpose of studying the humanities? If you’re going to college, you want to be able to get a job when you get out — don’t you? In an era when plumbers make more cash than music teachers, is there a reason for reading The Odyssey and exploring the maze of great writing? Daniel Mendelsohn explains it this way: “When your father dies, your accounting degree is not going to help you at all. But having read great authors IS going to help you.” Perhaps this is the reason so many people are having a difficult time coping with the everyday events of life. What if not reading books has more of an impact on society than we’ve realized? The arts open up avenues in our brain which allow us to develop critical thinking and empathy, things which many folks seem to be missing. As Anika Prather puts it: “We’re always on this journey of self-discovery and eventually coming back to the roots of ourselves.” Those roots need to be grounded in something solid: nature, humanity, Love. And our journeys change us, readying us to do more, to do better, to love more purely. Happy reading, dear Friends!

Living From Love

I have often been asked if Christian Science is a cult. Having been affiliated with this life since childhood, it’s easy for me to say it assuredly is not. I've never been controlled by anyone, or asked to worship anyone, or any of the other criteria necessary to qualify for this categorization. I'm sure Course in Miracles students often get the same type of questions, as a quick search of the internet indicates. What we do ask of ourselves is a radical reliance, a wholehearted acceptance of Love as the only power, and the desire to let Spirit lead every action. Both of these schools of thought ask us to give up material beliefs and rely on Truth. And this may not be as difficult as it seems. Shouldn't it be easy to allow spiritual principles to guide our actions, rather than accepting material rules which make no sense? Living from the Truth within, rather than made-up rules of material existence, this is the free thought which will lead into harmonious peace for all.

Sharing the Joy

“The perception of my holiness does not bless me alone. Everyone and everything I see in its light shares in the joy it brings to me.” ACIM —  We are learning that this holiness is our true state of being as reflections of Love. This Love is realized through forgiveness in its purest sense. When I assert this truth about myself, I affirm it for everyone. Many of us think that such a statement about ourselves is arrogant; something to be avoided. What if the opposite is true, and it’s arrogant to think we can do everything through our individual, human intellect and reasoning? Perhaps true humility is acknowledging our holiness, allowing divine Mind to guide us, knowing we are all One.

“My holiness is my salvation. Since my holiness saves me from all guilt, recognizing my holiness is recognizing my salvation. It is also recognizing the salvation of the world. Once I have accepted my holiness, nothing can make me afraid. And because I am unafraid, everyone must share in my understanding, which is the gift of God to me and to the world.”

I Eat The Stars

Hope is a word with many meanings and implications. An old friend would always insist that hope was foolish, because you wouldn’t address the problem, only hope for a good result. We had many spirited discussions, with me on the side of hope, saying it meant looking toward the best possible outcome, without designating what that may be. And so when this book was brought to my attention today, it immediately piqued my interest! “I eat the stars”, is a book written by Sarah Wilson. On the surface, this book is about how to deal with the collapse of earthly systems. The author states that this collapse “is not a finality, but an invitation to reconnect with what matters to us, and to meet the future with courage, creativity, and unprecedented care.” She says that “breaking up with hope felt like leaving a toxic relationship.” And this does not mean giving up hope, but rather giving up the need to stay with the status quo. Perhaps the way we’ve always done things is not the way we should be doing things? She gives us tips on how to “stay kind and radically human as the world shifts around us.” In looking at our transition she asks the question: ”What if this new world we’re entering is more stunning than we’d ever imagined?” I like her thinking!
