The Words Got In The Way

In our small, tourist town, we have a wonderful thing. It’s called Heart of Many Ways. It’s a non-profit which provides places for spiritual groups to meet. These groups are too small to have an edifice of their own, and they have meetings and events in a beautiful, historic building which previously was a Christian Science church. Built in 1914, it is Italian in style on the outside and Arts and Crafts inside. Shortly after the pandemic began, they began asking performers to play for a noontime meditation. I was asked to play organ for them once a month and happily agreed to do so. After today’s performance, a man came up and was telling me why he had enjoyed the hour. He said when he was in a regular church, the words got in the way. He repeatedly placed his hands on his heart and looked up to the beautiful 20-foot ceiling, illustrating his words which were telling me how he had been uplifted by the hour of classical music. My heart soared with his as he told me of his traditional religious training and how they had never brought about the feelings he had experienced today. His joy was mine. Namaste…

“Under the Banner of Heaven”

There are upwards of 4,000 religions in the world. I dare to say they all have factions which have turned insane. I’m watching a mini-series called “Under The Banner of Heaven”. It deals with a militant faction of the Latter Day Saints, but I think the same thing could happen in any religion. The thing I noticed about these Patriots (as they called themselves), is that they have allowed their ego to take control over their thought processes. They began to think they were the only ones who knew the truth. When Mary Baker Eddy wrote Science & Health, she had no desire to start a religion and only did so because she wanted to ensure that the book would continue to be published in the years after her passing. She often stated that its reading would help a Baptist be a better Baptist, and she insisted that we not proselytize. In a similar manner, A Course in Miracles is not a religion and does not require that you follow any ritual or dogma. Anyone can benefit from its teachings, without giving up their lifelong congregations.  Seeing beyond the material picture of human hatred and righteous indignation is what we can do to change the world. Let’s remember: Every thought is important!

Frozen Habitual Beliefs

After watching the movie, "Frozen", I learned that it was being labeled as propaganda for a liberated way of living which particular groups think of as ungodly. I decided to see if I could turn the movie into a vehicle for what I think, so here it is -- without going into too much detail. We are frozen in a thought system which has been perpetuated by years of dogma and habit. When someone happens to realize their power as the expression of divine Mind, they are labeled as bad, perhaps someone to be feared, maybe even told to hide their light so as not to upset others. And so they hide until someone finds out how fabulous they are, then they either deny it and continue to hide or accept themselves in all their glory -- and they shine! This shining lights up the world from the inside out.

Is This Where I Belong?

Any number of people have told me they feel they don’t belong here. At some time or another, we probably all have felt this way. What if, rather than us not belonging here, this "here" we speak of isn't what we think it is? What if we don't belong in this crazy world, but the world we see isn't reality? Perhaps our true home is something we've sensed is there, sort of like seeing a movement out of the corner of your eye, but when you look directly at it, it's not there. For years I grasped at straws while ignoring the vast Truth of eternity. We're not strangers in a strange land when we realize the truth of Life. We may think everything we touch and see is real, but it's shifting and changing, as opposed to the omnipresent stability of our true home. So let's be still a moment and ask to know what that home is. We want it so badly, but we've forgotten what it is. Perhaps now we're not afraid to remember!

Human Rights

In my lifetime, I have seen many advances in our understanding and the implementation of so-called human rights. We have seen the Voting Rights Act, Title IX sex discrimination legislation, the Americans with Disabilities Act. Supreme Court rulings overturned state bans on contraception and interracial marriage. Abortion and same-sex marriage have been legalized. It seems odd that our government would have to guarantee these fundamental human rights, but many things had become illegal since our country’s inception, and women and minorities were always stifled when it came to voting and holding certain stations in life. We made many advances during the 1900s, and we were proud of our open minds and higher thinking. Now it seems many people think these human rights are not necessarily something which should be legislated. I agree they shouldn’t have to be, as as we are all one in Spirit. Well, I won’t go on and on about this. It’s pretty simple if we let our beliefs and ego fade away and allow Love to rule our ways. Namaste…

Is It True, Kind, Necessary?

 

Long ago, during a Course in Miracles meeting, good-friend Ramona said, “You better watch out what you say in front of Marsha. You may end up in the dailies!” I was reminded of this today when a dear friend from forever called and told me she had momentarily thought yesterday’s writing was about her. We both laughed at this idea. Then I began thinking how these daily writings keep me honest. I’m prone to jumping on my high horse and pontificating, so I’m always aware of this irritating trait within myself. Sometimes it’s tempting to use this venue to complain about things and tell people what they should do. But I don’t want to do that. By putting my thoughts into words, knowing they will be read by others, there is a built-in test; one which I hope to employ in day-to-day interactions: “Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?” I trust my dear friends will help me stay true to my mission!

Have you ever noticed that folks who defend themselves the most seem to have the most to defend themselves against? I’m friends on social media with an acquaintance from school days who is constantly telling us we must beware of this, that, and the other. It’s quite astounding how many things she’s afraid of, and wants us to shelter against, too. She recently posted a long diatribe. While I would usually block someone who does this consistently, she fascinates me and I look forward to her angst. I know that’s a horrid thing to admit, but it’s true. Everyone was getting so excited about her warning today that I simply posted: “My safety lies in my defenselessness”. After checking her reaction to this statement, I was pleasantly surprised. She “loved” it! So another lesson for me: Do NOT make assumptions. Namaste…

Perceptions Dictate Actions

We often hear of cruelty beyond comprehension. How could anyone possibly perpetrate such behavior? I would hazard to guess that, if asked, the people responsible would not think they were acting in a cruel manner. They would probably say it was necessary to protect themselves or others from some threat. Somewhere along the way, we have decided that it's all right to kill and perform other heinous acts because it's a logical defense against something or the other! Once again, The Four Agreements come to mind. In this wonderful interpretation of ancient Toltec wisdom, Don Miguel Ruiz explains four simple rules to live by which would ensure peace and happiness for everyone. The second agreement is, "Don't take anything personally". He goes so far as to say that even if someone shoots you in the head, it's not your problem, but theirs! I love this as it puts into perspective what we have misinterpreted. We seem to think retaliation is an acceptable behavior. I have a friend who tells me that Jesus told her she'd forgiven her sister enough, and it was all right to hate her now. Wow. I guess that's what I mean by people thinking they're doing a service to the world by killing or other gross behavior. We can convince ourselves, with our mortal minds, that anything is good. This illustrates the importance of letting go of all material beliefs. We are learning to listen, allowing ourselves to understand that as a reflection of divine Love we are capable of living Truth. We are not only capable of living this pure Life which is God, but it is our natural state, expressing only Love. The Utopia which comes with such a dream is a reality, when we allow it.

The pandemic brought about many changes in our thought systems. Once we slowed down from our constant busy-ness, we began to think deeply again. Many people wondered what their purpose was. While we’re rushing about to meetings and other activities, we tend to feel our purpose is whatever it is that we’re doing at the moment — i.e., I’m a mom, an organist, a card player. When these activities stopped, some of us felt purposeless. I’ve recently had the epiphany that I don’t need to try to right wrongs, even though they seem to be screaming for me to do something. Everyone has a purpose, but that’s not mine. Perhaps by my realized purpose, wrongs may be righted by the changes which will occur because of the joy I’m experiencing. Yes, that is what I think my purpose is: to bring joy. In visiting with older friends who have limited access to the outside world, I find the laughter I bring to them seems more important than anything else. This is not to say that next week my purpose may be something else. We must listen and follow, right? But for now, my purpose is found in the joy I bring to others. So watch out friends and neighbors — happiness may be sneaking up on you!

I Want to See

We, as humans, clutter ourselves with any number of trivial pursuits in order to keep from seeing and knowing Truth. We may occupy our time with busy-ness in order to keep Truth from sneaking in. There was a time in my life when I was a semi-hermit. I read five or six books a week, but nothing of import; lots of horror stories and historical romances. Time spent with others was in a bar, talking about politics, gossip, and other mind-numbing topics. I went to extremes to keep from thinking about the reality of my being. I see others using television, the internet, anything that will totally occupy their minds, in order to keep from seeing. What is this we refuse to see? The Truth of our being, the Truth that is God, the essence which I Am, the meaning of Life and our function as the expression of divine Love. There are many ways to define this sight, but only one way to see. We must have the desire to want sight and the willingness to let illusions disappear. "I am determined to see!" Fear Has No Home Here

I’m sure most of you know someone who identifies with fear, turning every situation into a nervous drama. A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson #160 states: “I am at home. Fear is the stranger here.” Reading this caused me to think of two different people I met today. While in the media center of our library, I noticed a woman I’ve known for years having her first computer lesson. As she got up from the keyboard, she had a barrage of questions for the librarian, most of them fearful “what-ifs”. As I was choosing videos to check out, she came up to me and continued fretting about the computer, telling me she was afraid she would break it. I assured her that wasn’t likely, unless she took a baseball bat to it or threw water on it. I immediately noticed the contrast between this woman and a young woman whom I’d met earlier in the day while doing laundry. She had moved to a strange town with two young children, knowing deep inside she was in the right spot. She was at home and she wore that loving knowledge for all to see.

What is your Self remains an alien to the part of you which thinks that it is real, but different from yourself. Who could be sane in such a circumstance? Identifiers and Solutions

In my younger days, I enjoyed horror stories. Stephen King was a favorite because of his exceptionally good writing and his insights into the psyche of the psychopath. I was fascinated by the awfulness of it. Going hand in hand with that fascination, was my desire to pollute my body with substances which seemed to be fun, but ultimately were not. Over the last three decades, I’ve given up these things one by one, some more readily than others. I’ve been thinking about the horrors of the political scene as we’ve watched it unfold over these same decades. It has culminated in a particularly intense awfulness at this point, and I have no desire to partake of its emotional rollercoaster. While it seems wise to know what’s going on, I’ve begun to question even that. But I go back to the old statement attributed to a wise person: I only want to hear about the problem as an identifier; after that, I only need to think about it to find solutions. As of today, I reaffirm my conviction to do this. I wish you peace in whatever way you choose to do good!

“The Holy Spirit’s problem solving is the way in which the problem ends. It has been solved because it has been met with justice. Until it has it will recur, because it has not yet been solved. The principle that justice means no one can lose is crucial to this course. For miracles depend on justice. The End?

On a reverse-recommendation from an acquaintance, I am watching a series called The End. It deals with various people who are dying and/or want to. The woman who told me about the show was appalled as she felt that it encouraged people to commit suicide. She also thought that all the talk about death would “normalize” it and cause people to feel it was okay. Of course, I felt the urge to see it! I find it to be more about life than death. There is enough black humor to amuse me and enough love to inspire me. This show has caused me to think deeply about issues surrounding our life choices. There is a woman who feels guilty because she’s happy her philandering, preacher husband died. There’s the teenager who has attempted suicide because others at school ostracize her. I am reminded of friends and neighbors who are unhappy and are having trouble finding reasons to live. Life is good, even when it doesn’t feel that way. Finding joy in the small things brings happiness to the whole, don’t you think?

Only the oneness of knowledge is free of conflict. Your Kingdom is not of this world because it was given you from beyond this world. Shrinking Address Books?

After numerous decades of living, we humans begin to notice that our address books are having more and more names crossed out — or deleted, as the case may be. Many of us stress over this, and it becomes a constant topic of conversation when we’re together with others. We know lots of dead people, do we not? Many of our friends have moved offstage, and we’re standing in the queue. But as some of us move out, others move in. There are more and more grandchildren — either ours or our friends — and we delight in the newness and pure love. And that’s a good thing. We are in the process of recycling, perhaps? As many wise seers remind us, Reality is that which does not change. And nothing material is permanent. It is all in the process of changing. I have always chosen to embrace change and I hope to be as fearless in this unknown adventure. But for now, I choose to ground myself in the earth; feel the openness of the sky; watch the trees renewing themselves, and know all is well. Namaste…

Recognizing The Light As Our Own

Defenselessness is strength; defensiveness is weakness. This is most likely backwards from the way we think, and it may feel wrong because we’ve been taught to defend ourselves as thoroughly as possible in every situation. Ask yourself what you did and how you felt the last time someone disagreed with you, perhaps vehemently. If you began a verbal defense, listing all the reasons you were right, you may have felt many negative emotions such as anger. On the contrary, any time I’m able to witness events and calmly watch and listen, I can say something simple such as, “You may be right about that” — and walk away, happily and peacefully. We are told in A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson #153 that we will not see the light until we offer it to others and they take it; then we will recognize it as our own. How lovely is that! I look forward to opportunities for seeing peace today.
