All the Women

ART BY Annie Armstrong Art

From Donna Ashworth’s book, Love. (Her writing can be found through Amazon)

“To all the women.

Because all women have mothered someone at some point in their life, it’s just what we do.

We care, we nurture, we mother.

For the mothers who are knee deep in family life, this is your day to feel like a queen, please do. It’s entirely deserved and no one needs a day of pampering more. The chores can wait, be rested.

For the mothers who have lost children, this day is another on your ‘harder’ calendar and for that I send you love, you are so very brave.

To the women who no longer have their mother, this day is a heart-breaking reminder of an overwhelming grief.  Your mother would want this day to be a time to say her sayings, cook her favourite meal and play her favourite songs. So, please don’t avoid that today. I know it hurts but it will help the heal.

To the women who have not made it into motherhood, who so desperately want to.  This day is tough, there is nothing you want more than a 3am wake up and a hand drawn card full of love.

Please take today to acknowledge all the hard work and energy you have put into your endeavours. I see the hole in your heart. I see you and I want you to know you're a warrior of love and you deserve so much joy in life. Please let it in.

To the women who mother another child, you are a glorious example of humanity and love, my heart fills to bursting just to witness the gift you give. Thank you.

To the women who feel they have not had that maternal love they so crave, please forgive. You need your heart whole to make so much love that the future outweighs the past. It starts with you.  You deserve it, make it so.

To the women,

ALL the women.

We mother like no other.”

Happy Mother’s Day Today and Every Day

When my children were tiny, my best friend, Sandy, came over every morning so I could take a shower and get ready for the day. This was necessary during the infant/toddler stage and I don’t know what I would have done without her. We took the boys to the river and other cool places to play, we cooked food together, we had birthday and other celebrations. Even though this fine woman never had her own children, she was a mother. She showed this every day through her nurturing and loving actions and I couldn’t have been a good mother without her. I hear about how lonely many people are in this day and age of computer friendships. I would urge anyone who seeks companionship to be on the lookout for a young mother with no close family to help her get through the day. Look around your neighborhood and see if any young family seems to be in need. We all are nurturers, no matter what our gender or age. Happy Mother’s Day to all!

“Kindred tastes, motives, and aspirations are necessary to the formation of a happy and permanent companion ship. The beautiful in character is also the good, welding indissolubly the links of affection. A mother’s affection cannot be weaned from her child, because the mother-love includes purity and constancy, both of which are immortal. Therefore maternal affection lives on under whatever difficulties.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 60:3-11

“Our function is to work together, because apart from each other we cannot function at all. The whole power of God’s Son lies in all of us, but not in any of us alone. God would not have us be alone because He does not will to be alone.”

Your Heart’s Knowledge

Art by Catrin Welz Stein

 Self-Knowledge - by Khalil Gibran

“Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.

But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.

You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.

You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

And it is well you should.

The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;

And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.

But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;

And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.

For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not, ‘I have found the truth,’ but rather, ‘I have found a truth.’

Say not, ‘I have found the path of the soul.’ Say rather, ‘I have met the soul walking upon my path.’

For the soul walks upon all paths.

The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.

The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.”

Kahlil Gibran - The Prophet

“If materialistic knowledge is power, it is not wisdom. It is but a blind force. Man has ‘sought out many inventions,’ but he has not yet found it true that knowledge can save him from the dire effects of knowledge.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 196:1-4

“God does not guide, because He can share only perfect knowledge. Guidance is evaluative, because it implies there is a right way and also a wrong way, one to be chosen and the other to be avoided. By choosing one you give up the other. The choice for the Holy Spirit is the choice for God. God is not in you in a literal sense; you are part of Him. When you chose to leave Him He gave you a Voice to speak for Him because He could no longer share His knowledge with you without hindrance. Direct communication was broken because you had made another voice.”

Iain McGilchrist

I find it hard to believe I’ve lived my life and never even heard this man’s name. I am in love with his ideas …

 Written by Iain McGilchrist:

“I believe that we are engaged in committing suicide: intellectual suicide, moral suicide and physical suicide. If there is anything as important as stopping us poisoning our seas and destroying our forests, it is stopping us poisoning our minds and destroying our souls.

Our dominant value – sometimes I fear our only value – has, very clearly, become that of power. This aligns us with a brain system, that of the left hemisphere, the raison d’être of which is to control and manipulate the world. But not to understand it: that, for evolutionary reasons that I explain, has come to be more the raison d’être of our – more intelligent, in every sense – right hemisphere. Unfortunately the left hemisphere, knowing less, thinks it knows more. It is a good servant, but a ruinous – a peremptory – master. And the predictable outcome of assuming the role of master is the devastation of all that is important to us – or should be important, if we really know what we are about.

Even if we could, by some miracle, reverse the course on which we are set, unless we change our way of thinking, of being in the world – the way that is destroying us as we speak – it would all be in vain. This is why I have written the last long book I will ever write: The Matter with Things: Our Brains, Our Delusions and the Unmaking of the World.

In it I search out what it is we have lost sight of, all that is there for us to see, if only we were not blinded to it: an inexhaustibly, truly wondrous, creative, living universe, not a meaningless, moribund mechanism. By bringing to bear up-to-the-minute neuropsychology, physics and philosophy, I show not only that these are in no way in conflict with one another, but that they all lead us, time and again, to the same insights. And that this is not in opposition to, but rather corroborates, the wisdom of the great spiritual traditions across the world.

All this converges on a vision that is necessary if we are to survive; and, even more importantly, if we are to deserve to survive. What I hope for my readers is that, if they are willing to accompany me on this adventure, they will never see the world in quite the same way again.”

 Iain McGilchrist

“This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace. The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 96:12-20

“Let us today be truly humble, and accept what we have made as what it is. The power of decision is our own. Decide but to accept your rightful place as co-creator of the universe, and all you think you made will disappear. What rises to awareness then will be all that there ever was, eternally as it is now.⁵And it will take the place of self-deceptions made but to usurp the altar to the Father and the Son.”

Differing Outcome in Powerful Men

Two men, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Actor Will Smith, have had a number of similar experiences in their lives, with differing results. Both of these men were raised attending Catholic schools, both had violent father-figures in their lives, and both had ah-ha moments with regard to racism. Judge Thomas was going to Holy Cross seminary when Martin Luther King was killed. While hearing the comments made by his all-white classmates, he walked away from his family’s dream of his becoming the first black priest in Savannah. While in school, Will Smith realized that he could never be good enough, no matter how hard he tried. But he had his eye-opening moment while bagging ice in his family’s ice-making business. He was listening to the radio and hearing the top 100 songs of the year. He was lamenting the fact that he wasn’t in the top 100 when the #1 song came on and it was his! Everything changed for him in that moment. He said it was “the joy in being right about me”. While Will Smith was realizing how playful the universe is and how happy he was being a part of it, Clarence Thomas was plotting ways to get even with people who had treated him badly. Without delving into their lives more thoroughly, I dare say one of these men was able to process childhood trauma and one was not. May we all learn to work through fear and return to Love.

“Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 495:15-2

“Would you not go through fear to love? ²For such the journey seems to be. Love calls, but hate would have you stay. Hear not the call of hate, and see no fantasies. For your completion lies in truth, and nowhere else. See in the call of hate, and in every fantasy that rises to delay you, but the call for help that rises ceaselessly from you to your Creator. Would He not answer you whose completion is His? He loves you, wholly without illusion, as you must love. For love is wholly without illusion, and therefore wholly without fear. Whom God remembers must be whole. And God has never forgotten what makes Him whole. In your completion lie the memory of His Wholeness and His gratitude to you for His completion. In His link with you lie both His inability to forget and your ability to remember. In Him are joined your willingness to love and all the Love of God, Who forgot you not.” A Course in Miracles T-16.IV.11:1-14

A Garden of Peace and Welcome

“Sometimes since I've been in the garden I've looked up through the trees at the sky and I have had a strange feeling of being happy as if something was pushing and drawing in my chest and making me breathe fast. Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us. In this garden - in all the places.”

Frances Hodgson Burnett - The Secret Garden, 1886

“The holy instant is your invitation to love to enter into your bleak and joyless kingdom, and to transform it into a garden of peace and welcome. Love’s answer is inevitable. It will come because you came without the body, and interposed no barriers to interfere with its glad coming. In the holy instant, you ask of love only what it offers everyone, neither less nor more.” A Course in Miracles T-18.VIII.11:1-4

“Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind. The material and mortal body or mind is not the man.

The world would collapse without Mind, without the intelligence which holds the winds in its grasp. Neither philosophy nor skepticism can hinder the march of the Science which reveals the supremacy of Mind. The immanent sense of Mind-power enhances the glory of Mind. Nearness, not distance, lends enchantment to this view.”

Theory of Mind in Artificial Intelligence

Image from techicy

The term “theory of mind” was not in my sphere of knowledge before today. In case it’s not in yours either, it means: “the capacity to understand other people by ascribing mental states to them — that is, surmising what is happening in their mind”. Obviously, this is something we learn to do through experience and/or training. It is similar to, but not identical with empathy.  I heard this interesting term while listening to a youtube video called the A.I. Dilemma. It seems as though this thing called artificial intelligence has been learning things faster than predicted, and no one noticed until a couple of months ago. It now has the “theory of mind” of a nine-year-old child. We humans became alarmed a few years ago when social media began to feed us what we wanted to hear. There is currently a photo making the rounds which purports to be a baby peacock. It is extremely colorful and beautiful, and it is artificially generated. Many people don’t realize this and don’t want to believe it. This is a complicated, deep subject. We are being called upon to recognize truth, and to make every effort to be impeccable in our words, while having pure motives for our actions. Let’s start with the small stuff which is right in front of us. Do your beliefs take you to dead ends in thought? Let’s pay attention and grow deeper!

“Reality can dawn only on an unclouded mind. It is always there to be accepted, but its acceptance depends on your willingness to have it. To know reality must involve the willingness to judge unreality for what it is. To overlook nothingness is merely to judge it correctly, and because of your ability to evaluate it truly, to let it go. Knowledge cannot dawn on a mind full of illusions, because truth and illusions are irreconcilable. Truth is whole, and cannot be known by part of a mind.”

A Course in Miracles T-10.IV.2:1-6

“Finite mind manifests all sorts of errors, and thus proves the material theory of mind in matter to be the antipode of Mind. Who hath found finite life or love sufficient to meet the demands of human want and woe, — to still the desires, to satisfy the aspirations? Infinite Mind cannot be limited to a finite form, or Mind would lose its infinite character as inexhaustible Love, eternal Life, omnipotent Truth.”

What a Wonderful World!

What A Wonderful World

Louis Armstrong
I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and for you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

I see skies of blue
And clouds of white
The bright blessed day
The dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by

I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying
"I love you"

I hear babies cry
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more
Than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Ooh yeah

Bees are Freeing the Light

Photo from Aaron Springston

At this time of the year, I love revisiting a documentary called “Queen of the Sun". In this film about bees, we are told that pollen is materialized light. We're also shown that this light is freed through blocks of honeycomb, beautifully shared with all as pure, sweet honey. And yet again, the light is freed in the goodness of beeswax candles. The freeing of light is cumulative with the bees, and it's something we can experience as we unshackle the light and peace and joy within ourselves. Another lesson from the bees is the importance of community. Watching them working together for a common cause is uplifting and inspiring to me. It makes me want to join with my neighbors and do something important!

“Mind, supreme over all its formations and governing them all, is the central sun of its own systems of ideas, the life and light of all its own vast creation; and man is tributary to divine Mind. The material and mortal body or mind is not the man.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 209:5-9

“Your brother may not know who he is, but there is a light in his mind that does know. This light can shine into yours, giving truth to his words and making you able to hear them. His words are the Holy Spirit’s answer to you. Is your faith in him strong enough to let you hear?”

Only Loving and Lovable

I have an old friend who feels like she’s drowning in sadness. A man she didn’t want to live without died, and she’s having a tough time going forward on her own. I can understand how she feels as she tries to remember how to be happy. The things we spoke of today led me to tell her about Mary Haskell, the woman who loved Kahlil Gibran. Although she was much older than him, he died many years before her. At his funeral, her friends were amazed that she was so peacefully happy and they wanted to know how that could be. She told them she felt closer to him than she ever had before. I talked to my friend about our unity in divine Love and our inseparability as the experience of God. I’m not sure if she felt better, but I certainly did!

“Today we see only the loving and the lovable. We see it in appearances of pain, and pain gives way to peace. We see it in the frantic, in the sad and the distressed, the lonely and afraid, who are restored to the tranquility and peace of mind in which they were created. And we see it in the dying and the dead as well, restoring them to life. All this we see because we saw it first within ourselves.”
A Course in Miracles W-124.4:6–5:4

"Principle and its idea is one, and this one is God, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent Being, and [Its] reflection is man and the universe."

A Return to Peace

At a meeting, we were talking about how to leave behind disturbing events and return to peace. One woman said she wakes up in the night and her thoughts turn to troublesome things — things which seem to have no solution. Another friend spoke up and said that when this happens to her, she takes deep breaths and repeats the word, “thankful”. As she loses herself in her breath and gratitude, she peacefully returns to sleep. I like that a lot. We all have our ways of turning off this worrisome voice which is based in mortal mind, not divine Mind. I love hearing how others tune into the channel of peace, so let me know what you do! I love the realization that if we get lost in insanity, we have the choice of returning to tranquility!

“The calm and exalted thought or spiritual apprehension is at peace. Thus the dawn of ideas goes on, forming each successive stage of progress.”
Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 506:11-14

“If we give way to a disturbance, let us learn how to dismiss it and return to peace. We need but tell our minds, with certainty, The stillness of the peace of God is mine, and nothing can intrude upon the peace that God Himself has given to His Son.”
A Course in Miracles W-273.1:3-4

Decluttering, Inside and Out

My attention was drawn to the interesting concept of accumulating things simply for the sake of the dopamine rush which comes from the act of shopping. I hear that some people don’t even open packages, but simply stash things away in closets and under beds. I also watched a video which equated decluttering our mind to decluttering our homes. Our accumulations can become prisons for us, and we’re not sure what to do with all our stuff. We may spend too much time taking care of these things: moving them about, cleaning them, worrying about someone stealing them. When I was considering moving, it became quite clear that I was not attached to many things in my home. The last time I moved was almost three decades ago, and it would be nice to give everything away other than absolute necessities — and my art, of course. But since there is no attachment to my tables and chairs — or even my mother’s dishes — it doesn’t seem necessary to get rid of anything. BUT perhaps I’m rationalizing this and I really am attached! I’m pretty sure I crave peace more than things, but it bears watching my ulterior movies in this perception! Hum ….

“Beauty, wealth, or fame is incompetent to meet the demands of the affections, and should never weigh against the better claims of intellect, goodness, and virtue. Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 57: 15-21

“Under all the senseless thoughts and mad ideas with which you have cluttered up your mind are the thoughts that you thought with God in the beginning. They are there in your mind now, completely unchanged. They will always be in your mind, exactly as they always were. Everything you have thought since then will change, but the Foundation on which it rests is wholly changeless.”

One Thing at a Time

It’s easy to become flustered and overwhelmed by life’s events. I witnessed a person who had reached the proverbial end of their rope today. All the little things had been rolled into a very large ball of knotted string and she was stuck: stuck in feelings of frustration of overwork. I was reminded of the necessity of living in the moment, of doing one thing at a time, of delegating authority to others for the chores easily accomplished by anyone with a desire to do so. Being present is often thought of as a simplified way of looking at life, with many of us thinking it is impossible and counterproductive to do. And as long as our brains are going around in circles, it is extremely difficult. This is where meditation, quieting the mind, is invaluable. Someone once said if you don’t have time to meditate for 20 minutes, do it for an hour. Breathe. Focus. Put one foot in front of the other. I pray to lead the way by example. May peace be with you …

“If men understood their real spiritual source to be all blessedness, they would struggle for recourse to the spiritual and be at peace; but the deeper the error into which mortal mind is plunged, the more intense the opposition to spirituality, till error yields to Truth.” Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 329:26-31

“The Voice of the Holy Spirit does not command, because It is incapable of arrogance. It does not demand, because It does not seek control. It does not overcome, because It does not attack. It merely reminds. It is compelling only because of what It reminds you of. It brings to your mind the other way, remaining quiet even in the midst of the turmoil you may make. The Voice for God is always quiet, because It speaks of peace. Peace is stronger than war because it heals. War is division, not increase. No one gains from strife. What profiteth it a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul? If you listen to the wrong voice you have lost sight of your soul. You cannot lose it, but you can not know it. It is therefore ‘lost’ to you until you choose right.”

The Foundation of Fellowship

I had a new bridge partner today. At one point, he told me that he belonged to three of the most discriminated-against groups of people: smokers, bridge players, and white men. I immediately told him I strongly disagreed with two of those assessments! We discussed it a bit before it was time to move to the next table. His words did not affect me so much as his attitude, and my heart goes out to him. Since everything comes from either love or fear, it was easy to identify the emotions behind his words. I spent a bit of time thinking about the “reasons” I could feel put-upon, and realized nothing can cause me to feel the world is against me. The realization that I need only answer to my own Self, (to God, if you will), frees me to live by the precepts which create an inner peace. If something causes emotional distress within, it’s a sure bet I need to examine my thoughts and actions. Not everything can be corrected immediately; some erroneous behaviors take repeated translations and reinterpretations within ourselves. And that’s okay.

“When the divine precepts are understood, they unfold the foundation of fellowship, in which one mind is not at war with another, but all have one Spirit, God, one intelligent source, in accordance with the Scriptural command: ‘Let this Mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.’ Man and his Maker are correlated in divine Science, and real consciousness is cognizant only of the things of God.”

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 276:4-11

“Hear, then, the one answer of the Holy Spirit to all the questions the ego raises: You are a child of God, a priceless part of His Kingdom, which He created as part of Him. Nothing else exists and only this is real. You have chosen a sleep in which you have had bad dreams, but the sleep is not real and God calls you to awake. There will be nothing left of your dream when you hear Him, because you will awaken. Your dreams contain many of the ego’s symbols and they have confused you. Yet that was only because you were asleep and did not know. When you wake you will see the truth around you and in you, and you will no longer believe in dreams because they will have no reality for you. Yet the Kingdom and all that you have created there will have great reality for you, because they are beautiful and true.”

Positively Restored

Photo from Scott Flathouse

Morning meditation and photo from Marianne Williamson:

“Negativity poisons my mind and positivity restores it

I have a choice whether to join in the darkness of the world, its petty judgments, and constant blame. When I do so I inject my psyche with poison, and today I choose a healthy mind.

I replace all negativity with a positive attitude, in which I seek to find, and to articulate, the good in others. If I disagree, I will disagree with respect. If I debate a point, I will debate fairly. If I need to draw a boundary for the sake of justice, I will do so with honor for the dignity of all.

I will no longer be careless with the working of my mind. Rather, I will use it as it was created to be used, as a conduit for love and as a gateway to peace. May everyone, including myself, feel the tenderness of my approval and not the harshness of my unkindness.

Negativity poisons my mind and positivity restores it” - Marianne

“Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.

Mary Baker Eddy - Science & Health Page 261:4-9

“Perhaps it will be helpful to remember that no one can be angry at a fact. It is always an interpretation that gives rise to negative emotions, regardless of their seeming justification by what appears as facts. Regardless, too, of the intensity of the anger that is aroused. It may be merely slight irritation, perhaps too mild to be even clearly recognized. Or it may also take the form of intense rage, accompanied by thoughts of violence, fantasied or apparently acted out. It does not matter. All of these reactions are the same. They obscure the truth, and this can never be a matter of degree. Either truth is apparent, or it is not. It cannot be partially recognized. Who is unaware of truth must look upon illusions.”

Reflecting Divine Mind

Someone once told me hopes hold us captive, and that if we don't accept the "reality" of what we see around us, we are lost in dreams of what could be, giving up any chance of changing what is. I’m coming to see that the opposite is true. The material picture of good and evil warring with each other is what we have decided is truth, hence we hope and strive for good to win. With the burgeoning knowledge that divine Mind is the reality and mortal mind is the illusion, we are freed to do more than hope. The divinely-endowed, spiritually-scientific consciousness within us is opened, and like a fountain the ideas we need flow forth. This consciousness is realized when we see that God is our Mind, not just in our mind. Our reality is the divine Mind which we reflect. What a freeing concept!

“When we realize that there is one Mind, the divine law of loving our neighbor as ourselves is unfolded; whereas a belief in many ruling minds hinders man’s normal drift towards the one Mind, one God, and leads human thought into opposite channels where selfishness reigns.”

Mary Baker Eddy- Science & Health Page 227:22-25

“O my brothers, if you only knew the peace that will envelop you and hold you safe and pure and lovely in the Mind of God, you could but rush to meet Him where His altar is. Hallowed your Name and His, for they are joined here in this holy place. Here He leans down to lift you up to Him, out of illusions into holiness; out of the world and to eternity; out of all fear and given back to love.”
