Review: "I am the light of the world" and "Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world."

I love silly situation comedies, such as Modern Family.  A favorite episode is one where Claire has lunch with an old college friend. Her friend has a very successful career and an exciting life as a single woman. Claire is jealous and wants to show off her three kids and husband of seventeen years, so she takes her friend home to meet them. Her handsome husband is inexplicably wearing a huge fake mustache and is trapped in a port-a-potty placed there by the water department while they work on the lines. Her oldest daughter is having a loud altercation with her boyfriend. Her other daughter and her son have been recycling in the neighborhood and have the kitchen filled with semi-empty bottles of alcohol. The son is in his underwear because he spilled booze all over himself, while the daughter is trying to catch a rat which came in with the boxes. So much for self-importance, huh? Most of us probably have a silly story about a situation which backfired when we've wanted to show off in some way. If we stop and think about these feelings and what's behind them, it's easy to see how this desire to be "special", to be better than someone else, is at the core of every disagreement and conflict in the world.  With the understanding that we are all the reflection of Love, God, each demonstrating our individuality within this realm of unity, it becomes possible to release false images of self-importance and relax into the perfection of this experience we know as life. By doing so, we are the light of the world! Seeing ourself in others and others in ourself, we fulfill our function of forgiveness. We do this by giving up ideas and beliefs which foster the misconception that we are all different, and instead embrace Love as our common denominator.

March 21, 2014 - What, Me Worry?

ACIM Workbook Lesson #80

"Let me recognize my problems have been solved."

We now realize that our only problem is thinking we are separate from God. We also see that it is impossible to be separated from our source, so our problem is already solved by that knowledge. This realization that our problem never existed in any way other than belief is such a freeing notion! It doesn't matter if the "problem" is one of a child who is making choices we feel sure will cause him and others pain and sadness, or if a sickness seems to hold us in its grip, or a financial struggle of some sort appears to be keeping us captive. All these maladies of sense are one and the same to the metaphysical principle which negates them. And that's what this lesson tells us today. The knowing that we're a reflection of God, actualized by our emanation as Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love, lets us live with no limits in our human existence. In my lifetime, I've seen this divine Principle at work in so many ways. This seeing beyond the material picture to the spiritual truth allows us to live Truth rather than erroneous material beliefs. And it's a brand new world!

March 20, 2014 - What's the Problem?

ACIM Workbook Lesson #79

"Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved."

Are you a list maker? If you have a list of problems which need to be solved, it should be a relief to know there is only one problem and only one solution! If you watch or listen to news and feel overwhelmed by the problems of the world, it is a welcome respite to realize there is only one solution, and that is shown through a recognition of the problem. Actually, there is no need to think about a solution, you only need recognize that there is but one problem -- and that realization is, in itself, the solution. Every problem which seems to be is the result of one thing: a belief in separation from God.  When something comes up which seems like a problem, I will (hopefully!) sit quietly and ask within, What is this problem? Then  will listen, expecting an answer. When the problem has been identified, I will ask what I need to know to solve it. In stillness, I will expect an answer. The key to this is getting out of the way by releasing my ideas about what the problems and solutions are. While this may seem impossible to do, I shall at least recognize the possibility of it happening. If nothing else, I will recognize that all these problems cannot possibly be solved on the level of form where they occur, as there are too many and they are too complex, changing and shifting with circumstances. It is enough that I acknowledge there is a metaphysical Principle upon which the logic of today's lesson is based. And I will admit that all I want is to know more of that One law.

March 19, 2014 - Seeing With Pure Eyes

ACIM Workbook Lesson #78

"Let miracles replace all grievances."

Today's lesson asks us to choose one person and see them as God sees them, with pure eyes, rather than with all the muddled grievances we may be holding. This person might be a co-worker who seems to find ways to undermine us regularly. Perhaps this person is a good friend whose behavior is irritating to us. Maybe it's a neighbor who allows his dog to poop in our yard. Gosh, there are so many, it's hard to choose just one!!  The circumstance really doesn't matter though, because when we choose to see the miracle of Spirit, the false testimony of material sense disappears. Once we fall into the trap of expecting "bad" behavior from others, that's what we get! A fellow shopkeeper and I were discussing this. It seemed that the people coming into her shop were careless with merchandise, loud, dull, and not contributing to the fun-loving atmosphere we are known for in our sweet little tourist town. We wondered if it's true that we get what we expect. Can changing our expectations change the result? Or is the result the same and we're simply seeing it differently? I'm not sure it matters, as seeing a result and trying to change it is not what this way of thought is all about. Our goal is to see with God's eyes, and with that sight we are led to do what needs to be done, in any and every circumstance. It's been said in so many ways by so many people throughout time. Ghandi asks us to be the change we wish to see. Rumi advises us to be with those who help our being. Jesus tells us the kingdom of heaven is within. There are many ways to say what you see with Love. How do I Love? Let me count the ways!

March 18, 2014 - The Miracle is God's Law

"I am entitled to miracles."

These miracles we so desperately seek are the natural order of things, and are ours for the knowing of that Truth. Most,  if not all of our material celebrations are based on myth, and often are quite odd and far-fetched. Why do we do these things? I suppose they're all based on history of some sort; remembrances of past events. Usually, they involve a lot of drinking and so-called celebrating, and there is often some type of nationalism involved. Like this St. Patrick's Day craziness -- what's up with that? Perhaps it's because we want to believe in magical beings which give us happiness and abundance. We tend to think these things are somewhere outside of us, and we can find them if only we get lucky enough to be at the end of the rainbow. Some think everything will be great if they give their lives to Jesus. And let's not forget about those birthday wishes coming true if we blow out all the candles! Maybe we celebrate so hard because we innately know all this good is ours simply for the acknowledgement of it, but we don't understand how to do that.  So we dance, drink, celebrate. We try so hard to find what is already ours, just waiting for us to be still and know it. The miracle is God's law. Now that's something to celebrate!

March 17, 2014 - Divine Principle or Material Law?

“I am under no laws but God’s.”

The laws we make for ourselves are very interesting, don't you think? In the late 1600s there was a law in Massachusetts that a woman couldn't kiss her child or husband on the sabbath. It's amusing to look back at some of the limits we used to set, isn't it? But what of the laws of "nature"? We once thought we'd fall off the edge of the world if we traveled too far. Many laws we had concerning the body were just as nonsensical. When Mary Baker Eddy began writing and teaching the Science of the Christ, many thought her to be insane (at best!) -- until they saw physical proof of  this Principle. It could be said that the laws of Mind are unchanging and eternal, whereas the laws of mind change as quickly as our beliefs do. In these studies, we are learning there is a difference in divine Mind and mortal mind. It takes a yielding of the material to the spiritual in order to see the Truth of our being. Often we're afraid because we think we're breaking a law and will be punished for it. The knowledge that we are under no laws but God's brings a freedom before unknown! Soon we will look back on the material laws everyone thought to be so sure -- and realize they were but part of the illusion. Then we will know complete freedom!

ACIM Workbook Lesson #75

"The light has come."

Our perseverance in dropping false testimony of the material senses is celebrated today: The light has come! Of course, it has always been there, waiting for us to notice it. But now the sun (son?) has risen and we are basking in its arrival! In my line of work, I meet numerous people every day. It's really fun getting to know so many people who seem different from each other, while noticing the Light they all share. One day I met a man who referred to his wife as an angel, telling me of the ways she brings joy to their life. The light has come. And then there was the grandmother from Canada, meeting her daughter and granddaughter who were from South Texas. The stories they told me during our short time together were humorous and loving.  The light has come. There was an old hippie couple, visiting from a short distance away, where they live hidden and happy in the deep forest. The light has come. I could go on and on with stories of these manifestations of Light. May we all bask in this celebration today! And if we meet someone whose light is in shadow, shine yours a little brighter at them, because love is reflected in love!

March 15, 2014 - Single Eye

ACIM Workbook Lesson #74

“There is no will but God’s.”

"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." Matthew 6:22 As I contemplate today's ACIM workbook topic, this thought keeps coming to mind. I love that these teachings bring us back time and again to the thought that there is only one thing we need do, and that is, basically, to see with a single eye. What, you may ask, does that mean? To me it means that everything I do, say, or think is from the standpoint that I am an expression of God. My only goal is to be a transparency through which that experience can shine. Last night I attended a sweet, love-based meeting of gentle people. At the end, the speaker encouraged us to stay in the same frame of mind we were in while listening to him. He stated a number of things that we might have been doing had we not been there: going to bars, getting into disagreements with family, things of that sort. I wondered if he really thought that about this group, or if perhaps he didn't think we were serious students of Life. Whatever the case, it made me happy that I can honestly say I want to know God more than all else.  I can't imagine anything which would tempt me to be otherwise!

March 14, 2014 - My Will Be Done!

“I will there be light.”

So much is said about willpower and its role in our self-control. And there is always more to be said and written about the subject, because of its changeable nature. But that's not the type of will that is being written of in today's ACIM workbook lesson. It's the same type of will talked about in "thy will be done". But it's the realization that "thy" is the same as "my" will be done. This will which we are yielding to is not some outer authority in the sky telling us what we should want. It's the omniscient, omnipresent gentle presence which is always present, but we so often hide with our human will, our mortal mind. This yielding of self will to the ever-present divine Mind manifests Itself in many wonderful ways. I witnessed one of those tonight. One of the constant complaints in our small tourist town is that our merchants are not open late enough at night. A local publicity agency in our town has come up with the idea to focus on what does go on at night in our town: 13 bars within walking distance in our historic downtown area. I hope this idea will grow to include the two music shows and the Great Passion Play which are nightly events  in our town. By focusing on what Is, rather than what isn't -- now, that's bringing in the light! Let It Be ~~~~

March 13, 2014 - Preparing to Hear Truth

ACIM Workbook Lesson #72

“Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.”

An upside down world seems normal to us. We have become accustomed to believing that the testimony of our physical senses is reality, while intuition is often discounted as being imaginary. Many of my favorite authors write about the  metaphysical concepts we are learning of, and some of them use the genre of fiction to allow them leeway to take this new/old thought all the way without the need for empirical evidence in support. And I applaud this method! What better way to introduce ideas to a skeptical audience than through the entertainment field? Dan Brown is an expert at this form of writing. He brings us thought-provoking concepts without asking us to accept them as true, such as in his book, "The Lost Symbol". Paulo Coelho gently hits closer to home in two of my favorite books, "The Alchemist" and "The Aleph". The enjoyment of these novels is softly preparatory for the life-changing concepts presented in A Course in Miracles and, also, Science & Health. Without prior opening of thought, the ideas contained in these books can be jarring indeed! We have been preparing for this opening of mind and heart for eternity, and there is no other time but that, is there?

March 12, 2014 - What a Plan!

ACIM Workbook Lesson #71

“Only God’s plan for salvation will work.”

The topic for today's workbook lesson could be misinterpreted as meaning there is some sort of predestined plan which we must follow if we are to achieve happiness and fulfillment. What we are learning has nothing to do with blindly following something we don't understand. It involves understanding that we are the expression of God, and until we realize what that means, we have no hope of trusting what we hear within our being. But mortal mind (the thoughts which come to us from material teachings and long-held beliefs) tells us that to listen to anything other than "logic" is foolishness. And so we plant our feet on the shifting sands of materialism and think we're doing the best we can under impossible circumstances. This winter, I've watched numerous Woody Allen movies. He is a master at  interpreting the human condition. In every scenario, there are good-hearted people following their mind, but rarely their heart. More often than not, the characters end up unhappier than they started out. But ever so often, one of these emotionally-rich characters find their way out of the trap they have made for themselves. And then there is bliss! After watching one of these intricately-written movies, I see the motives and acts of others through Woody's eyes. And it's easier to understand why some are acting in such a closed-minded manner. On the flip side,  I see them in their true light, as an expression of God. Through this sight, everything is seen differently, as it truly is in its spiritual reality. Now, that's a plan!

March 11, 2014 - Saving Grace

“My salvation comes from me.”

Too often I've expected a savior of some sort to bring salvation from all the wrongs I think should be made right. I've pointed fingers and expected guilty parties to fix what they've wrought. In these teachings, we are beginning to understand that salvation lies within. And so when we see someone step up and do whatever they can to alleviate pain, to bring the light of salvation to a situation, it's an occasion to rejoice! A good friend of mine regularly puts this idea into practice. She is a veterinarian and a number of years ago, she vacationed in Belize, a beautiful tropical paradise. While there, she realized that many (perhaps most) dogs were left to fend for themselves, particularly when it came to reproduction -- or the stopping thereof! She was led to return with a couple of her associates and they spent a week spaying and neutering dogs, and performing any other tasks which their limited budget and care facilities would allow. Following her lead, other veterinarians have joined the cause and there have been donations enabling the building of a facility from which these volunteers can do their work. What started out as one woman doing what she could has snowballed into many people sharing in an awareness (a salvation, if you will) of how to improve conditions for animals and humans alike. This wonderful woman has followed her heart, and through this action she has inspired others to follow theirs. I see this as the perfect demonstration of living Love. Her love for and kinship with all things living is an inspiration to so many. The realization of this inner knowing and her fearless efforts to improve conditions for these animals and the ones who love them, this is the salvation we all hold within ourselves. And it blossoms when we set it free through our actions.

March 10, 2014 - Spring Cleaning in Consciousness

“My grievances hide the light of the world in me.”

Cleaning cobwebs from dark corners is similar to finding within myself hidden grievances, which are hiding the light. It's possible I'm holding onto some of these because it's comfortable. The story I've created for myself might just fall apart if I let go any part of it. I may have convinced myself that I like my history and wouldn't want to give up any of it, much less all of it. I'm like a little child holding on to a stuffed animal, feeling like it's my security. Or maybe I'm a little older, holding on to cigarettes because they feel like friends and I'm not sure what I'd do without them. These are stories I've been building for years and years. It seems if I let them go, I may disappear. But what brilliance is hiding behind the cover of these grievance clouds? What light have I hidden behind the illusions I've created for myself and the world? I know something wonderful is there, just out of reach. So when an old story comes to mind, I will turn thought instead to contemplation of the wondrous Truth which flows in, out, and through me when I lift the veil created by my grievances. Now that's spring cleaning!

March 9, 2014 - Love is Inclusive

ACIM Workbook Lesson #68:

“Love holds no grievances.”

There's a delightful little book entitled "Einstein's Dreams" by Alan Lightman. It consists of numerous little stories centered around different concepts of time. In one of these, he tells us that those who live in the past are condemned to live there alone. Holding grievances requires living in the past. Today's Course in Miracles lesson commentary tells us that forgetting I am Love, forgetting everyone is Love, forgetting that everything is Love, is holding a grievance. So today I will hold thought to a return to Love -- a figurative return, as I remember that I never left, and neither has anyone else. This Love replaces all grievances in my thought, and by this process I am safely and peacefully at One with God, with Love, with all -- and everyone can come along on this trip!

March 8, 2014 - I Am Love

ACIM Workbook Lesson #67

“Love created me like itself.”

When I took class instruction in Christian Science, one of my classmates was having trouble understanding divine Love. Mary Baker Eddy gives  seven synonymous terms for God: Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love. We had many conversations about this during the 12 days we exclusively studied and learned about divine Science. He finally saw that he was thinking in terms of human love, hence he couldn't understand how God could be this emotion. While I can intellectually know that I am created by Love, which is my essence as the expression of God, sometimes it's difficult to feel.  And then I remember that Love created all that is real. My mortal thoughts often have nothing to do with reality. So I concentrate on what I know as reality, as Truth, as God. And often holding on to one spiritual truth is enough to allow me to remember what I've forgotten. There's nothing like a baby -- a baby person, animal -- particularly puppies! -- to remind us what pure Love looks like. So if you feel you're lacking in love, go play with puppies!

March 7, 2014 - Knowing the Truth

ACIM Workbook Lesson #66:

“My happiness and my function are one.”

Truth, in all its forms, has always been very important to me. Having this great love of truth, it came as quite a surprise to find out that the life I'd lived for 37 years, the name I'd used, the birthdate I'd celebrated, the people I'd called my mom and dad, were not the ones I'd been given at birth. When I was two months old, my parents took me from a niece who was 17 and had given birth with no one to help her. Her boyfriend had skipped over the border into Mexico. Her family ignored her, in an effort to convince her to give away her baby. After two months of being on her own, she relented and gave me to her aunt -- which is what her family had wanted all along. These wonderful people (who were the only parents I had ever known) then moved across the country and made a new beginning for us all. They did this in part to save this baby from the flood of criticism and judgment which accompanied a child born out of wedlock in the 1950s. Perhaps it was their living of this huge lie which caused them to instill truthfulness so solidly within me. For whatever reason, I am thankful to have it. Because of this love of Truth, I've always wanted to know it -- in every way. But in the past two decades, it's taken the form of spiritual Truth, which shows me my function and is my happiness. And it has set me free!

March 6, 2014 - One Thing ...

ACIM Workbook Lesson #65:

“My only function is the one God gave me.”

As a restless, young person, I resisted the only thing which was required in order to experience peace. I thought that to live in Spirit would be predictable and boring. Twenty years past that time, I find that everything is exciting and new! Without the willingness to be open to the field of all possibilities, I would be repeating by-rote behaviors and following learned beliefs. That, I now see, is what would be boring! By being willing to go inward and listen, I'm never sure of what I will say or do, but I'm confident of where that guidance will lead. On the occasions I forget to listen but hold forth with long-held, strong opinions, things don't usually work out in the same harmonious ways as they do when I'm willing to yield. And that is a strong reminder to remember that I, of my own self, know nothing.

March 5, 2014 - Breaking Free From Belief

ACIM Workbook Lesson #64:

"Let me not forget my function"

Have you ever been accused of something you did not do? An unjust charge carries with it a terrible feeling. This same feeling follows many of us around because we have been told that we were born sinners and there is nothing we can do about it. We have come to believe it is our function on this earth to try ever so hard to overcome this innate badness. Isn't it a wonderful thing to experience teachings which show us that this is not true? The understanding of our essence as the pure expression of God, and the realization that anything unlike this experience is a material illusion brought to us courtesy of tainted human beliefs, frees us to be happy. Gone is all the guilt we may have carried around, thinking we were condemned by a power from which we couldn't escape. There has been no condemnation by any power, only illusionary powers to which we have given credence. Breaking free from these beliefs, we are free to be happy, healthy, whole -- and we bloom!

“The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness.”

Once we realize something is ours, then we are free to give it away. Once we realize something is ours, it is everyone's by virtue of our unity as expressions of God. Every time we choose peace, rather than joining with someone in anger or agitation, we have exercised our light-bringing peaceful function. I used to think it was impolite not to listen when someone wanted to tell me things I didn't need to hear. For instance, today a neighbor began to tell me of a situation where another neighbor had said things to him which hurt his feelings. As I realized he wasn't going to stop, but wanted to talk about it and speculate about why she was horrible, I simply said, "Wait. I'm not going to go there with you." Looking back on the conversation, I wonder why I didn't say this years ago! I no longer think it's impolite to speak the truth. Why should I listen to this any more readily than I would, for instance, watch a horror movie? I'll just say no!

ACIM Workbook Lesson #62:

"Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world."

"I wish I'd known about this way of thought earlier in life," a friend said to me. He was concerned that he wouldn't have enough time to assimilate this Truth he is learning. So many responses came to mind that I chose to say none of them. Time -- what a concept! We are eternal, so how can there not be enough time to realize something we've always known? Yes, that does sound rather esoteric, or perhaps a bit "woo-woo" -- but doesn't it seem true? I know I've mentioned this Deepak Chopra quote before, but it bears repeating: "Time is something we've made up so everything doesn't happen all at once." Looked at in this way, don't we already know everything that ever has been or every will be? This is our function: to remember. And through forgiveness, we grasp our strength as the expression and experience of God. With that knowledge of our true Self, we open the gates of understanding in all areas of existence. There are no limits as to time and space. We have the ability to grasp concepts, to actualize ideas, and to function as the light of the world. The lovely thing about this is, no matter how much I think I know, there is always more to this never-ending adventure!
